Trailer Talk

Trailer Talk: Hillbilly Elegy, Monster Hunter, and more!

Hillbilly Elegy

A little insight into how I put these together. I document a list of trailers to comment on for each week, and I watch them all on the day before publishing, so I often end up getting an idea of what some of the reactions are prior to actually seeing these. So, I was curious when I saw folks making fun of this. Now that I’ve seen it…I don’t entirely get it? Honestly, the only problem here is the music, it’s cranking the sentimentality to 11, so it’s heightens the already big performances, making them seem more over-the-top than they might actually be. I’m pretty sure this is more a trailer problem than a movie problem. I’m more aware of the backlash to the book than the actual book itself, but I’m willing to give this a shot. Ron Howard doesn’t always hit, but he’s made enough great movies that I’m willing to always give him the benefit of the doubt.

Hillbilly Elegy will hit select theaters and Netflix on November 24th.

Monster Hunter

I’m not familiar with the game that this is based on, so I can only go on what I see here. I know people are angry about it, I mean, hell, just look at that dislike bar. But…I think it looks kinda cool. Sorry. Just being honest. It’s got big monsters. It’s promising big action. I like Milla Jobvovich. What exactly is in this that I’m not supposed to like? I guess I have to be familiar with the game to know. But just as a dopey blockbuster, this looks fun to me.

Monster Hunter opens in theaters on December 30th.

Sylvie’s Love

A jazzy period romance starring Tessa Thompson? Put this right into my veins! This looks absolutely lovely. Not the most unpredictable by any means, but who cares as long as it’s still compelling, and it certainly looks compelling to me. I beleive it premiered at Sundance with good word-of-mouth, so that just makes me more excited.

Sylvie’s Love will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on December 25th.

I’m Your Woman

This is totally up my alley, a 70’s set crime thriller about a gangster’s wife on the run. Getting a bit of a Gloria vibe from this, which is great. I’ve only seen Fast Color from Julia Hart, but I did enjoy that quite a bit, so I’m excited to see what she does with material like this. Not a whole lot else to get out of this trailer, it’s pretty straightforward, but I like it.

I’m Your Woman will hit select theaters on December 4th before releasing on Amazon Prime Video on December 11th.

Come Away

Our second trailer of the day to feature a large number of dislikes, except this one I don’t remotely understand. Is it the Black people? Is it still bothering people to see them in certain types of movies where we don’t typically see them? I honestly don’t know, but either way, I am really intrigued by this. It’s a fascinating mish-mash of fairy tales from Brenda Chapman, who co-directed The Prince Of Egypt and Brave. We don’t get a ton of live-action fairy tales, and this looks wonderful. I’m definitely looking forward to this.

Come Away will release in theaters and on VOD platforms on November 13th.

Proxima

I’ve been waiting for this film for a while now. Glad it’s finally getting a release. THe reviews from its festival run seem solid enough, and I like the actors here. I haven’t seen Alice Winocour’s other films, but I have seen and loved Mustang, which she co-wrote. You all should know by now that I love pretty much any space movie or space-adjacent, so I have a feeling I’m gonna dig this even if it isn’t necessarily perfect. Consider me sold.

Proxima hits VOD platforms on November 6th.
