Hellboy
Huh…I was under the impression this was supposed to be the “darker,” more “horror” like version of the character because Mike Mignola didn’t like what Guillermo del Toro did. Maybe this is just a profoundly misleading trailer, but if I’m being honest, I’m kind of sold on this. I just really like the cast, and Neil Marshall is a pretty kickass filmmaker. This isn’t at all what I was expecting, but I still kinda like it (and I should make it clear that I’m not familiar with the comics). I will say, though, I’m going to be very upset if “Mony Mony” by Billy Idol isn’t in the actual movie.
Hellboy will hit theaters on April 12th, 2019.
The Mustang
Oooh, I like this a lot. I think I’m gonna dig the hell out of this. I recently caught up with The Rider (amazing, by the way), so maybe I’m just riding that sad dudes with horses high, but this looks really compelling. It’s written and directed by a French actress and filmmaker, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who I’m not familiar with, and this is her first feature-length project as a writer/director. That’s pretty interesting, and having Robert Redford’s name as an Executive Producer makes it seem like he’s got confidence in this, plus the cast is great. I haven’t heard of this until I just saw it for this post, but it’s going to be one that I’m looking forward to.
The Mustang will hit theaters March 15th, 2019.
Men In Black: International
The hammer gag at the end there is aces, but the rest is…underwhelming? I blame whoever cut this trailer. It’s awkward, paced weird, doesn’t give us a substantial glimpse at who these characters are. It’s barely a trailer. However, I’m still excited for this. I consider the first Men In Black to be a perfect movie, but not necessarily untouchable, a new movie with new characters sounds great, and with these two, I am so on board. I just hope the next trailer is better.
Men In Black: International will open in theaters on June 14th, 2019.
Where’d You Go, Bernadette
Look, it’s a new Richard Linklater film, that’s really all I need to know. Oh, it’s starring Cate Blanchett? That’s even better. I haven’t heard much of the book this movie is based on, but this looks super sweet. I’m into it.
Where’d You Go, Bernadette will be released in theaters on March 22nd, 2019.
Downton Abbey
Um…I haven’t seen any of Downton Abbey, so I’m not entirely sure what to say about this teaser. It’s clearly something designed to appeal to fans of the show, but I’m curious if the film itself will be that way, or if the filmmakers will make it more accessible for people who aren’t aware or haven’t seen the show. Hopefully, I’ll have more to say once a proper trailer is released.
Downton Abbey will open in theaters on September 20th, 2019.
Mapplethorpe
Man, this trailer started off pretty promising until it weirdly morphed into a very traditional looking biopic complete with a bizarre, out-of-place orchestral music that does not fit the kind of energy that this trailer was going for. The subject is a compelling one, and while I haven’t had a ton of exposure to Matt Smith’s work, he seems to be really embracing the role here. I don’t know, the trailer isn’t inspiring a lot of confidence, and a March release date for something like this isn’t doing that feeling any favors. But I hope for the best.
Mapplethorpe will open in theaters on March 1st, 2019.
The Wild Pear Tree
Nuri Bilge Ceylan is an extraordinary filmmaker, and if you haven’t seen Once Upon a Time in Anatolia or Winter Sleep, consider checking them out. They’re slow and not particularly “exciting,” but they’re rich and rewarding films. So, naturally, I’m in for whatever he does, and this looks great. I can’t wait to see it.
The Wild Pear Tree opens in select theaters on January 30th, 2019 before expanding in the following weeks.
