Gladiator II
Oh, if only this were based on the wacky Nick Cave script. But hey, who am I kidding? This looks like a good time. I feel like there was a period in my late teen years where I felt like Gladiator was overrated. And yeah, sure, I wouldn’t necessarily place it as among my favorites from Ridley Scott, it still very much rocks. It’s like what The Departed is to Martin Scorsese. A relatively straightforward genre exercise made by an expert craftsman at the top of their game. And this looks like a ton of fun, and I’m very excited about this cast, and obviously nobody does an epic quite like Scott. So, yeah, definitely excited about this.
Gladiator II will be released in theaters on November 22nd.
F1
Absolutely killer teaser. Immaculately edited, especially when it finished. I’ve been riding the Joseph Kosinski train from the start, but it’s nice that everyone else has come aboard since Top Gun: Maverick. It looks like he’s basically gonna do a lot of the same visual tricks he pulled off with the cockpit rig, but with these cars, which is really cool to see. Too bad we have to wait an entire year for this.
F1 hits theaters on July 27th, 2025.
Afraid
I don’t know, man. I guess it kind of got me intrigued by the end because there’s some implication about a physical manifestation of this AI thing, and there was that one person standing outside. I’m curious what that’s all about. But other than that, this looks generic as hell. Chris Weitz isn’t a bad filmmaker, but I don’t know if I see the vision here, I don’t immediately see anything of interest with this story, aside from its wildly overqualified lead actors. Could make for a fun time, maybe. But I’m not holding my breath.
Afraid opens in theaters on August 30th.
Jackpot!
Wow. A lot going on here. I was wondering for a moment why this comedy is inexplicably taking place in the future, but sure, for that lottery gimmick, yeah, checks out, I suppose. But also, I wonder who Paul Feig got to do the second unit work because the action here looks surprisingly solid. Spy has been my favorite of his, but the action in that was largely serviceable except for a couple moments. But here, the action is catching my attention way more than the comedy. I do like Paul Feig, so I have a feeling I’ll dig this. Too bad it’s going straight to streaming, this looks like it would have been fun to see in a theater.
Jackpot! will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on August 15th.
My Old Ass
This is such a cool and fresh take on the coming-of-age film. Even if you do kinda have to look past the fact that I don’t really buy that Maisy Stella will grow into Aubrey Plaza, but that’s neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things. I can see this being very emotionally resonating, if they hit everything in just the right way. I’m very curious about this.
My Old Ass will hit theaters on September 13th.
Agatha All Along
I haven’t watched anything on Disney+ in a while, I’ve been meaning to see The Acolyte, but just haven’t been motivated to sit down and watch it. This does look intriguing. I like the horror angle, it kind of has a Buffy kind of vibe, like one of those 90s supernatural shows. The cast looks fun as well. I just hope they actually stick to doing their own thing as opposed to force themselves into fitting in the superhero mold like a lot of these shows. Could be good, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Agatha All Along premieres exclusively on Disney+ starting September 18th.
