Frozen 2
So, are we collectively still in the “Frozen is the most overrated movie ever” stage or have we circled back to “actually, Frozen is really good?” I don’t remember. I was an unabashed fan day one. I still remember seeing a late night 3D showing after work when the first one was released, and I somehow had the entire theater to myself. I was pretty much immediately swept up and moved by the story, the animation, the humor, the drama, the characters, and the songs. And given it made a billion dollars, it’s no surprise that a sequel is made. This is really solid teaser, especially in terms of selling the scope. I’m very curious to see it.
Frozen 2 hits theaters on November 22nd.
Ma
What?!? Where the hell did this come from? This is a Tate Taylor movie? I don’t know what the deal is with this movie, but whatever it is, I’m into it. Octavia Spencer going full ham looks like a absolute delight, there’s a surprise Luke Evans halfway through the trailer, she runs over a teenager at one point, this looks wild, and I am here for it.
Ma comes out May 31st.
Yesterday
This could be fun. I’ll see anything Danny Boyle does, and Richard Curtis is a very talented writer. It’s also cool seeing a South Asian guy as the lead for something like this. The premise is amusing enough, even if the film – from the look of the trailer – doesn’t really take into account how vastly different things would be if The Beatles weren’t around. Still, I really hope this is good.
Yesterday will be released on June 28th.
Love Death + Robots
I remember hearing about this anthology from David Fincher and Tim Miller, but I didn’t expect it to hit so soon. Either way, I’m excited. I loved the energy of this trailer, and I love the variety of styles and looks of these shorts. Hopefully with things like Into The Spider-Verse, western animators in the industry are more emboldened to push animation into cool, new directions. Though, it it worth noting that these shorts are made by teams of animators across the world, which will definitely lead to some interesting results. I can’t wait to see this.
Love Death + Robots hits Netflix on March 15th.
Tolkien
More of a tease than an actual trailer, but I actually dig this. I hope this doesn’t become just another biopic. I’m hoping some of these stylistic flourishes are a sign that the filmmakers are doing something different with the formula. I had to look up the director because I didn’t recognize the name. Dome Karukoski is a Finnish director who has had a pretty consistent output for the last decade. I haven’t seen any of his film, but they seem to have solid acclaim behind them. I’m curious to see what he does here.
Tolkien will be released in theaters on May 10th.
Triple Threat
Hell yes! Please, I just wanna see this, I’ve been waiting for so long! Apparently issues with the Chinese distributors caused the delay, since this was supposed to release last year, but it looks like everything is sorted out. Avengers eat your Goddamn heart out, this is the crossover action fans have been waiting for. I mean, they use the word “Killingest” in the trailer. What else is there to say? I’m in, man.
Triple Threat will have a one-night theater event on March 19th before hitting VOD on March 22nd.
The Curse of La Llorona
I love that they go out of their way to have a narrator just for the title so that the people watching will know how to pronounce it. It’s a pretty smart move that allows movies revolving around different cultures to not feel the need to dumb things down for a white audience. I dig it. The movie itself? It looks solid. This director will be tackling The Conjuring 3 instead of James Wan, so I’m guessing that means Wan really believes in him, and if that’s the case, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Even the films where Wan is only producing is starting to have a similar look and feel to his own, and I hope this director, Michael Chaves, brings in some of his own personality in this. I think this has potential.
The Curse of La Llorona will hit theaters on April 19th.
