Fast Color

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is a treasure, and it’s a shame that Hollywood hasn’t taken advantage. So, it’s cool to see her in something like this. Oddly enough, if for some reason you thought Glass doesn’t capture what made Unbreakable great (I’d disagree, but whatever), this might actually scratch that melancholic, stripped down superhero itch that Unbreakable did so well. I’m very intrigued by this.

Fast Color hits theaters on March 29th.

The Hummingbird Project

I find it kind of funny how Alexander Skarsgård and Jesse Eisenberg basically switched the kind of roles they’d usually get. Eisenberg is the charismatic, genius business type and Skarsgård  is the awkward geek. If I’m being honest, I’m still a bit confused as to what they’re trying to accomplish, the trailer is full of the kind of kinetic editing tricks that tend to distract, but I’m hopeful the film itself will be more coherent. It looks like it could be neat.

The Hummingbird Project will be released in theaters on March 15th.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase

This looks alright. I only read a couple Nancy Drew books when I was young, so my knowledge on the property is pretty limited. I don’t even recall much from the 2007 movie. It’s cool to see Sophia Lillis be the lead in something. She was terrific in It, and it seems like she has the kind of screen presence and charm to carry a movie on her own. This adaptation certainly skews pretty young, so while I may not be as super into it, I think it might resonate with younger kids, girls in particular.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase opens on March 15th.

Dogman

I haven’t seen all of Matteo Garrone’s films, but the couple that I have seen are legit. He’s a talented filmmaker, and this looks like something that will be really cool to see. It looks like it’ll be dark, violent, emotional, the whole shebang. Plus, you got some cute dogs throughout, and that kind of playful contrast is very appealing to me. I’m very curious to see this.

Dogman will hit select theaters on April 12th.

Knife + Heart

This looks fun! A giallo inspired film set in the gay porn scene, sounds gnarly as hell. I actually saw a movie recently that was also inspired by giallo film (but it’s embargoed, you’ll see a review next week), but whereas that film puts some twist on its tropes, this feels like a classic, trashy giallo film from the late 70s to early 80s. I’ve heard some solid stuff about this from its festival run, so consider me interested.

Knife + Heart opens in select theaters starting March 15th.

The Beach Bum

I swear, this trailer is like the whole “big mood” meme manifested in movie form. I am so into this, you have no idea. Well, actually you might because I talked about the teaser a while back, and that was great, and this is great too. I’ll always be interested in whatever Harmony Korine does, and from the looks of this, it’s like he’s evolved as a storyteller. This is easily one of my most anticipated films of the year.

The Beach Bum will open in theaters on March 29th.
