Fair Play
Feels like a silly things to have caused so much chaos, but then again, I haven’t dealt with this kind of dynamic in a relationship before. The movie itself does look pretty good. It’s a directorial debut from Chloe Domont, so who knows how it will turn out. But Netflix is putting this one out in theaters before streaming, so they must really believe in it to have made a move like that. I am intrigued. I initially thought it was going for an erotic thriller vibe, but it’s not that, but it does look compelling for sure.
Fair Play hits select theaters on September 29th before streaming exclusively on Netflix October 13th.
Dicks: The Musical
I feel like this is the first time in a movie trailer I’ve seen an actor listed with the “Grammy Winning” qualifier. Has that been done before? Anyway, this trailer…it’s…interesting. It’s nice to see Larry Charles behind the camera with another movie. A24 doing a musical sounds fun. There are some gags here that made me chuckle. But the energy here is already wearing me out just from the trailer, mainly from the two leads more than anything. This looks irreverent enough to warrant a watch, that’s for sure, but I’m still on the fence about how I think I might feel about it. I’ll give it a shot though.
Dicks: The Musical hits theaters on September 29th.
Piaffe
This looks freaky, I like it. I’m getting a strong Peter Strickland vibe from this. I haven’t heard of filmmaker Ann Oren before this, but she seems to have a background in visual art, which feels apparent here. It has a cool, experimental feel that draws you in. The trailer is very well assembled. It makes a strong first impression, that’s for sure.
Piaffe will be released in select theaters on August 25th.
Before, Now & Then
Love this trailer. It’s so dreamy, so atmospheric, the imagery is incredible. I can definitely see the Wong Kar-wai influence all over this. But it also looks like Kamila Andini is very much doing her own thing. I haven’t seen her prior work, but I am intrigued. I do want to venture into Indonesian cinema more outside of the genre stuff. This looks like a good one to start with.
Before, Now & Then opens in select theaters starting August 25th.
Ashoka
Rest in peace, Ray Stevenson. He will be missed. This looks alright. These Star Wars shows have been kinda mediocre for me, they have their moments, and I wouldn’t say they weren’t enjoyable, but none have stuck with me. This one looks interesting, but my big worry is that it will lean so heavily on me knowing information from animated shows that I haven’t seen. I hope it’s able to strike a balance between letting fans have a leg up on what’s going on while making it easy to follow for newbies.
Ashoka premieres exclusively on Disney+ starting August 23rd.
The Kill Room
This trailer has an odd vibe, I think I like it, but I’m not sure. Shout Factory releases can be hit and miss. But I really like the cast assembled here. The idea is pretty amusing, even if it goes for some of the more obvious jokes. This is the kind of movie I’d want to wait and see what the word on the street is before checking it out, but I do hope it’s good, I’d hate to see this cast and this premise wasted.
The Kill Room opens in select theaters on September 29th.
