I have no idea what’s going on here, but I’m really digging the old school vibe of this. I haven’t seen anything from Mark Jenkin, though I did hear that his previous film, Bait, was terrific. Unfortunately, it still doesn’t seem to be available anywhere. I guess this 70s, very grainy film aesthetic is Jenkin’s whole thing. It does seem to work really well with material like this. So, I’m excited to check this out, and see what it’s all about.
Enys Men opens on a currently unspecified date in early 2023.
I’m kind of on two minds about this. On one hand, I like the idea of a Pixar rom-com, if that’s where this is going. Obviously, the animation and everything look incredible. But on the other hand, what is this? Like, what is this world? I’m struggling to understand what these things are, and how it all works. Is this a world within our world, or it its own thing? Granted, this is just a teaser, and it is a little ridiculous for me to get a strong understanding of its worldbuilding just off that, but…it’s weird. And I can’t help but overthink it. I did like The Good Dinosaur more than most folks, who knows, maybe Peter Sohn’s got more up his sleeves here.
Elemental will be released in theaters on June 16th, 2023.
Seems a bit early to release a trailer for this now, but OK, you do you, Focus Features. Look, Willem Dafoe is one of the best there is, so the idea of having a movie that is just him going insane all by himself in a fancy looking condo over the course of the movie…it sounds like a pretty good time, not gonna lie. I know nothing about any of the people involved in this, so I have no expectations for this. Which could work in its favor, I like going into something, and having no clue as to what kind of experience I’m in for. Consider me intrigued.
Inside opens in theaters on March 10th, 2023.
This looks way better than I could have expected. I love the whole Sixth Sense meets Mean Girls vibe, I like the idea of seeing Auliʻi Cravalho play a total asshole, Riele Downs seems like a fun lead, though I do think the fourth wall breaks are maybe a bit too extra, but whatever. I think this looks like a ton of fun, and I can’t wait to see it. Not much else to really get into, the trailer is fairly well assembled, the jokes seem solid. I hope it turns out great.
Darby And The Dead streams exclusively on Hulu starting December 2nd.
Pretty wild that Nicolas Cage has not been in a western up until this point. Too bad this had the first one, huh? I shouldn’t say that, maybe the film is really good, and the trailer just isn’t doing a particularly good job of conveying that. The production values don’t help much either. Digital cinematography does not do westerns any favors unless you really make strong aesthetic choices. But then again, I do love Nicolas Cage, I try to watch as many of his movies as I can, and the idea of him starring in a western revenge movie is appealing to me, so perhaps I’ll give it a shot.
The Old Way opens in select theaters on January 6th before hitting VOD platforms on January 13th, 2023.
OK, so we have an actual release date now. Great. I already posted a teaser with a similar length not too long ago, and a lot of the clips shown are pretty similar, just without dialogue. What little dialogue is in here does give you a mild sense of what’s happening, but there’s still clearly a lot they’re holding close to their chest, which is amusing since Refn’s movies have been more about mood than plot. I’m sure you can assemble a trailer giving away everything that happens in Drive or The Neon Demon, but watching the whole thing is a whole different experience. Needless to say, this is something I’m very excited for, so maybe I’ll even do a Some Thoughts On post about it once it hits.
Copenhagen Cowboy hits Netflix on January 5th, 2023.
