Trailer Talk: Dìdi (弟弟), Thelma, and more!

Dìdi (弟弟)

After Eighth Grade, I figured the floodgates would start opening to coming-of-age films that covered the late 2000s to early 2010s era. It hasn’t quite turned out that way, which may be a blessing in disguise, who knows. But I will say this looks very good, and very interesting. And having this cultural backdrop will give a fairly familiar story some unique perspectives. Very much excited for this one.

Dìdi (弟弟) hits theaters on July 26th.

Thelma

This looks very cute! I’ve heard great things about this during its festival run, and I’ve been really looking forward to seeing it. Who needs the Beekeeper when the old folks can get things done on their own? Funny that these two are coming out the same year. Love seeing June Squibb lead a film at the age that she’s on. It’s really cool, and this looks like something that’ll be very special and fun. I can’t wait.

Thelma hits select theaters on June 21st.

Firebrand

I haven’t heard much about this movie, which is surprising because it apparently premiered at Cannes last year. I really liked director Karim Aïnouz’s film The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão, which I’m pretty sure was one of my favorite films of the year it came out. So, it’ll be nice to see something from him again, especially now that he’s working on an English language production.

Firebrand will be released in theaters on June 14th.

Good One

What a roller-coaster that was. It seemed so chill until the last 30 seconds suddenly took a turn, and I didn’t even know what the turn was. No clue what’s going on, and I’m worried this is gonna be one of those movies where they really give you no information and force you to fill in the blanks, in a way that is unearned. But this has gotten really good word-of-mouth, so there’s probably something to this. I’m very much intrigued.

Good One opens in select theaters on August 9th.

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person

Quirky vampire movies are the best. This looks delightfully deranged. I don’t think I’m aware of any of the people involved here, so this will be a fresh watch through and through. It looks very fun. I wonder if Harold And Maude was an influence in any way, because that would definitely make for a unique take on the vampire movie. I’m absolutely here for it.

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person opens in select theaters on June 21st.

Kidnapped: The Abduction Of Edgardo Mortara

Well, this is a story I know absolutely nothing about, and it sounds absolutely bananas. Definitely makes for a compelling film. I’ve only seen The Traitor from this director, and I recall enjoying that, so I’m hoping this will be at least just as engaging and interesting. It definitely makes me want to look into the history behind this because it’s really fascinating. I’ll be keeping my eye out for this.

Kidnapped: The Abduction Of Edgardo Mortara opens in select theaters starting May 24th.
