Dating & New York

That last joke was pretty amusing, but on the whole, I’m not really sold on this. I feel like When Harry Met Sally should’ve been the end to this kind of story. It’s 2021, and having another film about “whether or not two people of the opposite sex can regularly hook up without developing feelings” feels like such a basic, heteronormative move. Perhaps, there is some deeper insight that the trailer is hiding, but I can’t say this appealed to me all that much. I might still give it a shot, though.

Dating & New York opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on September 10th.

Worth

This looks pretty interesting. Obviously, I’ll always be there for Michael Keaton, he’s one of my favorites, but even if he wasn’t involved, this story seems really compelling, and I can’t say I’ve seen a film touch a subject like this from this particular point-of-view. I don’t think we’ve even had a lot of films that are overtly about the aftermath of 9/11, in terms of victims and the ones they left behind. The director, Sara Colangelo, previously directed The Kindergarten Teacher, which I wasn’t the most fond of, but I think there’s potential for something really good here.

Worth hits Netflix on September 3rd.

Prisoners Of The Ghostland

Nicolas Cage and Sion Sono is a combination that I don’t know if I am mentally prepared for, but I am very excited to finally see something of this film. I’ve been looking forward to this since it was announced, and it looks about as wild as I had hoped it would be, if not more. I don’t have much to add here, this just looks bonkers and fun, and I can’t wait to check it out.

Prisoners Of The Ghostland hit select theaters and VOD platforms on September 17th.

Cry Macho

Can’t say I loved a lot of recent Eastwood movies, but he’s one of those guys I will always look forward to. I know some can’t get past his politics, but I think he’s an interesting filmmaker who is usually more nuanced that you would expect coming from a guy who talked to a chair on stage, and he’s made plenty of films I loved. This looks really good to me, I like the dynamic between the characters, and it looks like it’s a more emotionally driven story. I think there’s a lot of promise here, so I’ll be optimistic with this one.

Cry Macho hits theaters and HBO Max for 31 days starting September 17th.

Copshop

Frank Grillo and Gerard Butler in a quirky hitman thriller? Sign me the hell up. I did a double-take at the end when I saw that this is a new Joe Carnahan joint. I somehow had no idea this was a thing, but I’m sure as hell glad that I do now. I really dig Carnahan’s work, and his most recent film, Boss Level, from several months back, was pretty fun. This looks like a blast as well, and its cool to see Grillo play someone who isn’t a total tough guy, and of course Butler chewing up scenery is always going to put a smile on my face. I’m very much looking forward to this.

Copshop opens in theaters on September 17th.

Kate

Huh, another female led Netflix action movie that involves a young, cutesy companion? Alright. I was kind of disappointed with Gunpowder Milkshake, which felt a lot more stilted and tedious than exciting and fun. This does look better, but it does seem to have that same-y quality I’ve been seeing in all the slick, neon-heavy John Wick knock-offs, Gunpowder Milkshake included. Granted this one is actually from 87 North Productions, so it’s a lot of the same guys behind the Wick films as well as Atomic Blonde and Nobody, so it does have the potential to be better, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead does seem to be giving it her all. I’m gonna be cautiously optimistic.

Kate will be released on Netflix on September 10th.
