Trailer Talk: Creed III, There There, and more!

Creed III

Yes! So excited for this. Obviously, I loved Creed, and I really enjoyed Creed II, so this is something that I was always going to be excited for. While the lack of Rocky might be a bit disappointing, I can’t say that I missed him as I was watching the trailer. It’s a cool story, a great idea for a follow up to what we’ve already seen, and I’m very curious to see how it all plays out, especially with Michael B. Jordan behind the camera as well. I adore Jonathan Majors, I think he has the ability to be one of the all-timers if he keeps pushing himself, and I love the little touches he puts in his characters. I hate that we still have to wait for so long, but I’m sure it will be worth it.

Creed III hits theaters on March 3rd, 2023.

There There

I really loved Andrew Bujalski’s last film, Support The Girls, and while I’m not super familiar with all of his works, I’m definitely curious to see more. This one looks interesting. I haven’t read too much into it, but it was shot during the pandemic, and apparently, at least from the looks of it, no cast member ever shares the screen, like, they were all shot individually. That’s definitely an interesting approach, if that is how it was done. I’m curious to see what kind of effect that has on you as you watch it. It does look amusing, and I like the cast. So, I’ll keep my eye out for this one.

There There opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on November 18th.

House Party

So, I guess the only thing this has in common with the 1990 House Party is that…it stars two Black people, and there’s a party in a house…got it. Not to get too deep about it, it looks fine, I guess. I just find it baffling that this had to attach itself to House Party. The big appeal of House Party was the involvement of Kid ‘n Play, they were the stars. The idea itself is not that special, and could apply to literally any party-centric teen comedy. But this even goes as far to completely change a lot of the context to the point it barely resembles the setup of the original, so…I don’t know. I’m not writing this off, it could still be fun, I’m just annoyed that they felt the need to sell this with an already existing title even though it’s not the kind of genre that lends itself to that.

House Party opens in theaters on January 13th, 2023.

Poker Face

How have I not heard about Russell Crowe directing a new movie? Surprised that got past me. I enjoyed The Water Diviner, and this is something definitely on a more smaller scale, but I’m still quite intrigued by it. It does look pretty straightforward, and maybe even a little hokey, especially compared to the ambition of his debut, but I usually dig movies like this, so I’ll probably check it out.

Poker Face opens in select theaters on November 16th and VOD platforms on November 22nd.

The People We Hate At The Wedding

This looks alright. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, it’s really hard to trust any comedy trailer because most of them are made unfunny due to the editing that putting a trailer together requires. And just based on the vibe I’m getting from this trailer, it’s the kind of film that needs room to breathe for the jokes to work as opposed to rapidly cutting through them to rush to the punchline. I do see potential here, and I enjoyed Set It Up from the same director, so I’ll be cautiously optimistic.

The People We Hate At The Wedding will be released on Amazon Prime Video on November 18th.

Tulsa King

I haven’t seen any of the shows that Taylor Sheridan has created, though I hear they’re pretty good if you dig his vibes. But this is significant for a couple reasons, one is that the showrunner is Terence Winter, Boardwalk Empire creator and Wolf Of Wall Street writer, and it’s Sylvester Stallone’s first big TV gig. I think I’ll be making some time to check this out, this looks fun. I like the idea of a gangster trying to make his space in a new territory, but none of the old rules really apply, and problems only arrive because he starts them. I’m wondering how much they’ll lean into that element, but I like what I see so far. Fingers crossed it’s good!

Tulsa King premieres exclusively on Paramount+ on November 13th.
