Concrete Cowboy

I don’t know why, but for some reason, in all this time gearing up for this, I thought this was going to be a period piece. I think I only ever saw a picture of Idris Elba on a horse, and thought to myself, “yup, that’s all I need.” Still, this does look really good, and I’m always fascinated by films that shine a light on lesser known subcultures. The cast here is stacked, it looks well made, and yeah, this was something I was always excited about, but now that I know what it actually is, I’m still looking forward to it.

Concrete Cowboy hits Netflix on April 2nd.

Monday

I gotta say, whenever I see posts about Sebastian Stan, framing him as this big heartthrob, I didn’t quite get it. Having seen this trailer…I think I understand now. In all seriousness, this look wonderful and charming. I especially love the camera work here, it feels raw yet ethereal, like capturing a daydream. I’m not familiar with the films of Argyris Papadimitropoulos, but this looks like it could be a really good intro to his work. I really like what I see here, and I hope the film lives up to this energy.

Monday hits select theaters and VOD platforms on April 16th.

The Unholy

Sam Raimi has a fairly good track record as a producer through his Ghost House Pictures company, but it’s not spotless. The premise of this is pretty interesting to me, but this is coming from a first time director, who has previously been known for writing films like the 2014 Hercules, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, the live action Beauty And The Beast, and a bunch of direct-to-video Disney animated sequels in the early-to-mid 2000s. It’s not the most promising resume, if you ask me. However, I’m always willing to give people a shot. I like seeing Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the lead here, and like I said, the basic premise is cool. So, I think I’ll be cautiously optimistic.

The Unholy opens in theaters on April 2nd.

The Banishing

Another supernatural horror film, I see. Of course, this one comes courtesy of Shudder, which usually has a good track record. I like me a ghost story, and this looks right up my alley. I also like a lot of the actors here. It even look like it takes a turn to the cult-y, which is always fun. Not much else I have to add here. I’m sold, and I hope it’s good.

The Banishing will premiere on Shudder on April 15th.

Every Breath You Take

How do you classify movies like these? Stalker movies? I don’t know, somehow “a random guy comes in and ruins the protagonist’s life from the inside out” doesn’t roll off the tongue. These movies have a tendency to really stretch suspension of disbelief, but they can be fun if done well. This is directed by Vaughn Stein, who directed a weird and stylish little movie called Terminal a few years back, and while it wasn’t great, I thought he showed potential with better material. The writer for this has no other credit, so I just got this trailer to go off of, and it seems mostly generic, even if it’s put together in a slick way. Could still be fun though with this cast.

Every Breath You Take opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on April 2nd.

Here Are The Young Men

You can tell this is one of those movies that was made before a cast member really blew up because Anya Taylor-Joy is barely featured in this. And sure enough, a little Wikipedia digging showed that principal photography began in August of 2018. Not sure why it took so long to get this out, but hey, a movie about young Irish delinquents sounds like a good time to me. I feel like I’ve seen tons of movies like this before, where troubled youth gets themselves into hot water, and something blows up in their face, forcing the main character to rethink their life choices. But, who knows, maybe this brings something new to the table. We’ll see.

Here Are The Young Men will be released on VOD platforms on April 27th.
