Cocaine Bear
I’ve been very curious about this ever since I first heard of the project being developed. This looks more or less what I expected, but I don’t mean that in a bad way. In certain respects it looks better, I didn’t expect it to get as gruesome as it does, which in retrospect does seem silly. I guess I expected the comedy to be the forefront with the gore element being secondary, but it seems like they’re going all in on the rampage. Of course, RIP the late great Ray Liotta. This looks like loads of fun. Can’t wait to see what Elizabeth Banks pulls off here.
Cocaine Bear hits theaters on February 24th.
The Big 4
Look, all I need to know is that there’s a new film from Timo Tjahjanto, and you have me. That’s it. The dude knows action filmmaking like few others in the whole business, The Night Comes For Us is a certified all-timer, and it’s actually cool to see him bring a more lighter, comedic approach this time around. This is definitely a new tone compared to his prior work, and I for one am very exited to see it when it’s out.
The Big 4 streams on Netflix on December 15th.
When You Finish Saving The World
I gotta hand it to the folks putting this trailer together, it looks pretty good, and from what I’ve heard during its festival run, the word was pretty mixed. Haven’t looked into the details as to why, but I didn’t see a ton of love for it. But this trailer has me very intrigued. And not just because it’s Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut. Though, if A24 had more confidence in this, I bet they would have released this in December as opposed to January, so it can qualify for awards season. Oh well, still curious.
When You Finish Saving The World opens in theaters on January 20th, 2023.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
So…a billion? I’d say a billion is a safe guess. I mean, the film looks fine, I guess. I have very little attachment to the whole Mario property, so I’m not feeling what this trailer wants me to feel. But I do imagine for those who do love these characters, this is pretty much exactly what you’d want, right? That’s the impression I’m getting. It’s incorporating a lot of things from the various games, it’s a straightforward enough story, Chris Pratt’s voice is still weird, but whatever. It looks fine.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits theaters on April 7th, 2023.
The Honeymoon
Man, this does not look great. Is Dean Craig the Hollywood equivalent of a one-hit wonder? He wrote Death At A Funeral, which is genuinely amazing comedy, and his writing is a big reason for that. But outside of that, just skimming through his IMDb, there doesn’t seem to be much that’s worthwhile, at least based on critical consensus and audience ratings. This doesn’t look terrible, but it does look generic and uninteresting. I don’t get how anyone can watch the recent Borat, and decide to cast Maria Bakalova as the straight person who doesn’t get any real jokes. But who know, maybe this will actually turn out great.
The Honeymoon opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on December 16th.
That ‘90s Show
I had to include this. I loved That ‘70s Show, it was one of those shows I was glued to, and watched for its entire run. I had the seasons on DVD. It’s a good show, and I was curious how they would handle this. Obviously, it’s a teaser, so it’s hard to get the vibe of what it will actually be like, but Debra Jo Rupp adn Kurtwood Smith have not missed a beat. I was almost more delighted just to see them than I probably would have been had the trailer included the old cast, which I hope they don’t use as a crutch. If we’re following new characters, I hope they commit to them, and allow them to grow, develop, and be fun to watch. Fingers crossed.
That ‘90s Show will begin streaming on Netflix on January 19th.
