Charlie’s Angels
I’m gonna be cautiously optimistic about this. There are parts of the trailer I really dug, and other parts that I wasn’t so crazy about, but that may have just been due to the weird way these trailers often get cut. I think Elizabeth Banks did a good job directing Pitch Perfect 2, and it’s cool to see her get to write and direct something like this. A part of me wishes this didn’t feel obligated to lean hard on the comedy like all the other movies, since the show was far from comedic, but I can see why that might not appeal to people much. I am digging the dynamic with the cast. It’s looking promising, I hope it delivers.
Charlie’s Angels opens in theaters on November 15th.
Midway
I almost forgot there’s a new Roland Emmerich film coming this year. This…definitely looks like a Roland Emmerich movie. It’s a pretty standard teaser, so there’s not a lot to say about it. It could be fine, but I can also see it be not so good. Emmerich isn’t necessarily the most reliable, but he can stage a solid set piece.
Midway will release in theaters on November 8th.
The Good Liar
Bill Condon is a competent, if inconsistent, journeyman director, so I’m not necessarily that into this because of him. However, this is written by Jeffrey Hatcher, who wrote the last Condon movie, Mr. Holmes, which I liked quite a bit, so that has me intrigued. This is a pretty good trailer, the premise is rock solid, and it’s cool seeing older actors get these kind of meaty roles. I’m very much into this.
The Good Liar hits theaters on November 15th.
Official Secrets
Keira Knightley in a movie that isn’t a costume drama? That’s rare. Jokes aside, this does look pretty solid. I am keeping my expectations in check because I can’t really call myself a Gavin Hood fan (though, I haven’t yet seen Tsotsi, which is apparently great). I do like the cast, and the story is intriguing enough, especially since I haven’t heard much of this individual, so it’ll be interesting to see this play out.
Official Secrets opens in select theaters on August 30th.
Queen & Slim
This looks stunning and really refreshing. I’m honestly surprised it’s taken this long to get a sort of “black Bonnie and Clyde” kinda movie. It’s probably the only way to do this kind of story without feeling stale at this point, and it looks really good. I’m obviously in for Daniel Kaluuya, and while I don’t know much about the director, Melina Matsoukas, aside from knowing she directed som TV and a ton of Beyoncé videos, I’m impressed by what I’m seeing here. I can’t wait to see it.
Queen & Slim opens on November 27th.
Black And Blue
This has a fantastic setup for a kickass action movie, and it’s so cool seeing someone like Naomie Harris take the lead here. Director, Deon Taylor, has a rather shaky filmography, and I thought his last film, Traffik, was not necessarily the best. I hope he was given the resources he needs to make this great because this could be something really fun and exciting, as well as timely. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this one.
Black And Blue will hit theaters on October 25th.
The Current War
Man, it’s about time this gets a release. It feels like it’s been forever since I saw the initial trailer for this back when it was supposed to get a November 2017 release. The trailer itself is perfectly fine, dare I say pretty good, but I’m honestly a bit skeptical since I did not care at all for director, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s previous film, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Plus, the word-of-mouth on this from its festival run has not been great. I’ll give it a shot, if only for the actors, and that Chung-hoon Chung cinematography.
The Current War open in theaters on October 4th.
The Peanut Butter Falcon
This looks fine, I guess. The cast is surprisingly stacked for something I hadn’t heard of before this popped up. I’m not super into the cutesy, indie quirk vibe I’m getting from the trailer, but there’s definitely a chance that might not be reflected in the actual movie. I like the people in it, so it could be worth a shot, but I’m not entirely sold at the moment.
The Peanut Butter Falcon will release in theaters on August 9th.
