Chaos Walking

What a weird premise. I’m not sure if I totally got all that, but I am curious. It’s a little hard not to be since this thing was initially meant to be released in March of 2019, but things didn’t seem to be working out as smoothly as the filmmakers thought it would. I believe they went for reshoots during the summer last year. But anyway, it’s here, it looks intriguing, the cast looks solid, weird wig aside, and I like Doug Liman as a director. I hope it turns out good.

Chaos Walking will hit theaters on January 22nd, 2021.

Pieces Of A Woman

I remember hearing about this from its festival run. The word was a bit mixed, people seemed divided, which is usually a sign that you got something really interesting and different. The only film I’ve seen from Kornél Mundruczó is White God, and I loved that film, it was one of my favorites in the year it came out. This trailer is certainly very promising, it’s nice to see Vanessa Kirby take the lead in something like this. I’m very intrigued by this, I can’t wait to check it out.

Pieces Of A Woman will open in select theaters in December before hitting Netflix on January 7th, 2021.

Tom & Jerry

I’ll start with the positive! The way the animation is incorporated into the live-action footage is incredible, especially considering how they seem to be using a form of 3D animation that still has the illusion of 2D. That is wild, and the animators deserve serious props for that. As a film, I’m not into it. I grew up watching tons of Tom & Jerry, and honestly, their whole shtick only works in short-form. You can’t just stretch their conflict to a feature without eventually doing something that goes against the whole appeal of it…like having most of the focus be on random human characters that I don’t care about. The cast looks fine, I guess, and Tim Story is a perfectly serviceable filmmaker, but this doesn’t really interest me (not that it should matter since I’m not the target demo here).

Tom & Jerry will open in theaters sometime in 2021.

One Night In Miami

I’ve been looking forward to this for a while, and this first look at the film is no disappointment. Very excited for what Regina King has in store here. The idea of her making a hangout movie in its most literal form with four Black icons of the 60s, sounds like my jam. It looks fun, insightful, the cast seems totally spot on with their performances. It’s a good year for Kemp Powers, who is adapting his own play here, and is also a co-writer and co-director on Soul.

One Night In Miami hits select theaters on December 25th before arriving on Amazon Prime on January 15th.

Let Them All Talk

This looks fun. Light, but fun. Granted, I didn’t think the last Steven Soderbergh film was that good, but it’s one of his very few blunders. And considering how light this is, I doubt there is much here to get wrong. Plus, when you have a trio like Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, and Dianne Wiest, with a little helping of Gemma Chan here and there, it just sounds like a good time to me.

Let Them All Talk will be released on HBO Max on December 10th.

Black Beauty

I have seen the 1994 adaptation of Black Beauty, and I honestly don’t remember much, but what little I do remember is that the film looked absolutely nothing like this. It just looks like any generic coming-of-age film, but with a horse thrown in there, like a less interesting Lean On Pete. Apparently, Kate Winslet does the voice for the horse, which I’m surprised they don’t bring up in the trailer until the very end. What a tease.

Black Beauty arrives on Disney+ on November 27th.
