Captain Marvel
This looks pretty rad, and that de-aging effect on Samuel L. Jackson is mindblowing. There isn’t really that big money shot moment in the trailer, but it’s got a lot of cool things in there. I like all the 90s stuff, I like the cast, I’m curious at what the various connections they’re going to make here to other MCU stuff, given it takes place in the past. I’m sure there will be a more stuffed trailer down the line, but this is a good tease.
Captain Marvel will be released in theaters on March 8, 2019.
Mary Poppins Returns
It’s Mary Poppins, y’all! Yeah, it’s hard to watch this trailer and not have a big grin on your face. Although, it kind of just feels like a loose remake of the original film. NOt that I’m necessarily complaining, it looks delightful. What struck me the most was seeing 2D animation again. Boy, do I wish Disney could return to that format, at least every once in a while. So, not a lot to say about this one, I love the original, I hope this works, I love the cast they got here. Here’s hoping it lives up to all our expectations.
Mary Poppins Returns will hit theaters December 19th.
Apostle
I’ve waited so long for some footage for this. I think Gareth Evans is one of the most gifted genre filmmakers out there, and it’s nice to see him bring his gonzo sensibilities to a project that isn’t a martial arts film, though it seems to be just as brutal. The glimpses of his camera work here is wild, and the violence looks intense. I’m very excited for this one, and anyone who has loved the Raid films should keep an eye out for this one.
Apostle will begin streaming on Netflix on October 12th.
Stan & Ollie
The makeup on John C. Reilly is insane! And the movie looks pretty damn good too. I only just realized this is directed by Jon S. Baird, who directed a gnarly 2013 movie called Filth, starring James McAvoy. This is definitely a different style for him, but it looks wonderful. Laurel and Hardy are a terrific duo, and Reilly and Coogan are capturing their essence incredibly well here. This is one I’ve been excited about for a while, and I’m loving how it turning out.
No U.S. release date has been announced yet.
The Dark
I stumbled on this trailer, and it was so interesting I had to put it here. I haven’t heard of this before, but the story seems fairly original, and it’s playing with some horror tropes in compelling, new ways. I’m very curious about this.
The Dark will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on October 26th.
The Haunting of Hill House
Hell yeah! This looks great! Part of why this is something I’m highly anticipating is the fact that this series will be written and directed by Mike Flanagan. He’s a stellar filmmaker who previously did Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, and he’s tapped to adapt Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep for Warner Brothers. He is the real deal, and I’m always excited for whatever he does. I haven’t read the book by Shirley Jackson that this is based on, but I have seen The Haunting (the 1963 version), and it’s one of my favorite horror films. It looks like Flanagan is very much doing his own thing here, which is more than welcome.
The Haunting of Hill House will hit Netflix on October 12th.
If Beale Street Could Talk
Yeah, I likely wouldn’t have included this on here since the teaser I talked about before plays more like a regular trailer. Hell, I think it’s a couple seconds longer than this one. But then I thought, man, this is simply gorgeous. So, bask in its beauty. It looks great, the word-of-mouth following its premiere at TIFF is great. I’m very excited to see what Barry Jenkins has in store here.
If Beale Street Could Talk will be released in theaters November 30th.
