Capone
I’ve been hearing about this movie for the past few years, and I’m glad that Josh Trank finally is able to release it, even if it seems to be done in the most unceremonious way imaginable. This trailer dropped right when it was also announced it got a new distributor, and a new release date, being less than a month away. Not the most promising circumstances, but I really want this to be good, and I do like the idea behind it. But I’ll be a touch cautious in my optimism. At least we get Tom Hardy doing a funny voice, what’s not to like about that?
Capone hits VOD platforms on May 12th.
Valley Girl
It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, so don’t quote me on this, but I never thought Valley Girl was considered some kind of “untouchable classic.” However, it is one of those movies so of its era that doing a remake, even one incorporating new elements like a jukebox musical seems rather…pointless? I totally forgot about this, and struggled to remember why it was delayed. At least, until Logan Paul showed up. Anyway, I do really love Jessica Rothe from seeing her in the Happy Death Day movies, the second one was one of my favorites from last year, and she’s a big part of why those movies work so well. But do I love her enough to watch this? Sadly, these Kidz Bop-sounding covers of all these 80s classics are killing me, so that’s gonna be a hard pass from me.
Valley Girl will be available on VOD platforms on May 8th.
The Eddy
Damien Chazelle, jazz, Paris, Joanna Kulig (who was amazing in Cold War), and André Holland speaking French? What an embarrassment of riches we got ourselves here. Also, Houda Benyamina (who made the wonderful film Divines) directed a couple episodes as well, and Jack Thorne had a hand in writing all the episodes too. This is a wildly talented crew, and while I still don’t have a firm grasp on what exactly is going on, I am very excited to see this.
The Eddy will premiere on Netflix on May 8th.
The Trip To Greece
From what I remember, I was really weirded out by the ending to The Trip To Spain, but that aside, I have always loved these movies. Spending time with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan is just such a blast, and really funny. I also dig how these movies have dived into some interesting introspection over the course of the films, and I’m curious to see how they continue that here. I really hope they never stop making these.
The Trip To Greece hits VOD platforms on May 22nd.
Dangerous Lies
I don’t think this is a particularly good trailer. It never quite sets up a hook. OK, two people used to work for a rich loner, who eventually dies, and leaves them the house, and then…bad stuff happens? Not entirely sure what they’re going for, but it could just be wonky trailer editing. Maybe the film itself is not bad, but I would be lying if I said that this is something I’m going to rush and see once it’s out.
Dangerous Lies hits Netflix on April 30th.

A quick note: I am grateful to everyone who comes over, and reads my stuff. I hope it provides some kind of distraction from all the things that are happening out there because of the COVID-19 situation. Having said that, my usual source of income is gone because of the pandemic, so while I am thankfully in a slightly better position than most, any contribution to my PayPal (which you can do so here) would be greatly appreciated. If you have any ideas for incentives for people who donate, I’m all ears, feel free to get in touch. Obviously, you don’t have to if you don’t want to, only give if you are able, and of course prioritize the ones in need around you. Stay safe, and thanks to anyone who donates!
