Borderlands

Well, gamers don’t seem to be very happy about this. I think I played the game for a bit, but fell out of it. Just wasn’t my jam at the time, and I never went back around to it. So, I can’t really speak to the characterization criticisms that people seem to have, but at least Eli Roth kinda nailed the aesthetics. I do worry that this is going to end up feeling like Guardians Of The Galaxy lite. But who knows, maybe this will be a situation where the adaptation elements are questionable, but the film itself will be just fine. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Borderlands hits theaters on August 9th.

 

Lousy Carter

I like the vibe of the trailer. Feels very old school. I love the cast too. I haven’t seen anything from Bob Byington, so I don’t know what to expect. I’m a touch put off by the dialogue, it’s hard to describe what bugs me about. I suppose it has this feeling of being very “overwritten,” if that makes sense. Maybe it’s just the trailer, maybe it all flows better in the movie. I do want to check it out. Could be fun.

Shirley

I think there’s definitely a story worth telling about Shirley Chrisholm. I’m just not sure if this approach, at least the impression of it that I’m getting in the trailer, is the way to go about it. It looks and feels like any generic biopic. I feel like you could insert bits from the Rustin trailer, and you wouldn’t notice. But hey, if it helps more people learn Chisholm’s name, more power to that, I guess.

Shirley streams exclusively on Netflix starting March 22nd.

 

Knox Goes Away

Michael Keaton back in the director’s chair? He’ll to the yes! I am so in. This premise is really cool too. Hitman movies can be a dime a dozen, but this looks really cool, and there’s a solid collection of actors involved. Movies distributed by Saban Filma can be kinda hit-and-miss, but I’m rooting for this one. I hope it’s really good, can’t wait.

Knox Goes Away hits select theaters on March 15th.

 

Femme

This looks great! I love the premise. I love how provocative and immediate it feels. I like the tension building, the visual style, the actors. This could be something really cool. Don’t have much else to add honestly, but I am definitely looking forward to this one. I’ll be keeping my eye out for it.

Femme opens in select theaters starting March 22nd before expanding in the following weeks.

 

The Beast

Another appearance from George MacKay today, and a very welcome one. This looks pretty good too. The trailer has a very eerie, almost trippy vibe. And the setup is really intriguing, a fun premise for a sci-fi feature that keeps things relatively low-key. I liked Nocturama OK, so I’m curious to see what the director brings to this kind of genre space.

The Beast will be released in select theaters on April 5th.
