Black Adam

While I wasn’t that big on Dwayne Johnson and Jaume Collet-Serra’s first collaboration with Jungle Cruise, I’m still looking forward to this. Superhero action might be more Collet-Serra’s speed than family adventure. I’m also curious to see if this actually takes a different direction from the image that Johnson has been putting of himself in his work recently. I’d love to see him commit as a bad guy. We’ll see.

Black Adam hits theaters on October 21st.

Nope

Yeah, this looks great. Was already excited for the new Jordan Peele as I said when I discussed the teaser, but this story is taking an angle I didn’t expect. The shots of the flying saucers are incredible, love the way those are visually realized. Not much else needs to be said here, can’t wait to see it.

Nope will open in theaters on July 22nd.

Mike

Cool trailer, and I really dig Trevante Rhodes as an actor, he looks great in this. Though, there is a part of me that wishes were still getting that Mike Tyson project with Jamie Foxx (if you haven’t seen the video of him describing the opening scene, it’s pretty great). This is from the guy who wrote I, Tonya, so that could be interesting. As much as I might be familiar with Tyson as a figure, I don’t think I know a lot about the nitty gritty details of his life, so this could be a cool experience.

Mike will begin streaming on Hulu starting August 25th.

The School For Good & Evil

So, this is based on a book that I’ve never heard of, so can’t say much on that. I gotta say, this doesn’t look like it was directed by Paul Feig, so as far as effects heavy blockbuster filmmaking, it’s definitely better than his Ghostbusters (which was fine, but visually didn’t suit his strengths). Is this supposed to be Harry Potter for a new generation or something? I mean, it’s got quite the cast with Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington being involved. Feig usually attaches himself to interesting projects, so I’ll be cautiously optimistic about this.

The School For Good & Evil will be released on a currently unspecified date in September on Netflix.

Black Bird

Rest in peace, Ray Liotta, you will be missed. This is from Dennis Lehane, who has been involved with a lot of projects that I dig. I’m guessing he’s a big reason why he’s managed to get such a great cast assembled here. The setup here is really interesting, and Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser’s dynamic looks riveting, that voice that Hauser is doing is eerie. I’m curious to learn about the true story that this is based on, seems like it would make for an interesting read. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for this one.

Black Bird begins streaming on Apple TV+ starting July 8th.

Beavis And Butt-Head Do The Universe

This is maybe going to appeal to maybe a handful of people between the ages of 28 and 35, but I’m very much in that group. While most of my Beavis and Butt-Head viewings weren’t done when they aired, they were more with tapes and syndication, and of course seeing the film on VHS, I was at that age when this appealed to me. This looks incredibly stupid, but the right kind of stupid, and I’m just happy that Mike Judge is still getting the resources to do the kind of projects he wants to do. Count me in for this.

Beavis And Butt-Head Do The Universe streams exclusively on Paramount+ starting June 23rd.
