Trailer Talk

Trailer Talk: Bardo, Aftersun, and more!

Bardo

I don’t think I’ve brought it up on here before, but you can count me as someone who is not the biggest fan of Alejandro G. Iñarritu. I haven’t enjoyed any of his films. I don’t like the word “pretentious,” but his work is the closest that I’ve experienced that gives off that vibe. I don’t find much insight, truthfulness, sincerity, or cohesion in his films. I don’t see how this will prove any different, but I always go in with an open mind.

Bardo, False Chronicles Of A Handful Of Truths hits theaters on November 18 before streaming on Netflix on December 16th.

Aftersun

I heard a lot of great things about this from its festival run. I haven’t read too much into it, so I don’t know exactly what it’s about, and I don’t know much about the filmmaker, Charlotte Wells, but Barry Jenkins is a producer, and the word has been so good that this is pretty big on my radar now. And the trailer doesn’t seem to give too much of what is going on away, so I’m definitely intrigued.

Aftersun opens in select theaters on October 21st.

Piggy

I didn’t read a lot about this when it hit Sundance, so I don’t know all the details regarding the consensus, but it seems to be good. I’m curious what fat people who have seen the movie thought of it, cause I can see it going both ways, especially since the director is not fat, and I’m not sure if she’s ever felt the kind of experiences her character has gone through firsthand. But I’m always up for some nasty genre fare, which this looks to be as such. So, I’ll probably check it out.

Piggy hits Alamo Drafthouse theaters on October 7th before expanding in the following weeks, as well as arriving on VOD platforms.

Knock At The Cabin

Man, this looks great. I’m always down for a new Shyamalan joint, for better and for worse, no one else does it like him, he truly is one of a kind. This is another film in which he is adapting someone else’s material, in this case a book, like Old was based on a comic. I haven’t heard of this book, so I’m happy to be going in pretty blind. There are so many places a premise like this could go, can’t wait to see for myself.

Knock At The Cabin opens in theaters on February 3rd, 2023.

The Mother

I kinda wish we could get these kinds of female action anti-heroes that don’t feel the need to add a maternal element to the story to give it an emotional hook. That’s one thing Atomic Blonde did right (among many). That said, this looks cool, I’ll probably dig it anyway, and Niki Caro could use a win after Mulan, which…wasn’t her best moment in the spotlight. This looks fun though, can’t wait to see more. It must be good, after all Netflix is dropping a teaser eight whole months before release.

The Mother will be released on a currently unspecified date in May of 2023.

The Last Of Us

I’ve been looking forward to this for so long. The Last Of Us is probably my favorite game of all time (also love the second one), and I’ve always been curious on how an adaptation would be handled. This looks damn near perfect, at least aesthetically. I’m curious how much of Left Behind and TLOU Part II they will incorporate, if at all. Having the team behind Chernobyl is a great choice, I have high expectations, I hope they’re faithful but also not afraid to do their own thing, it’s definitely a tricky balance. I’m very excited.

The Last Of Us will premiere on HBO Max on a currently unspecified date in 2023.
