Artemis Fowl
I have…no significant opinion on this. I vaguely heard of the books when I was young, but I never read them. This has some pretty interesting imagery, but not necessarily enough to make me excited. The only thing that’s somewhat compelling to me is that Kenneth Branagh is directing, and I’ll see anything he makes. It’s a teaser that is seemingly designed for fans, so I don’t have much to say, but if you’re a fan, I hope this lives up to what you had in mind.
Artemis Fowl will open in theaters on August 9th, 2019.
The Vanishing
This looks pretty damn good, especially for a Gerard Butler January movie. Like, it seems like it’s going to be more than the trashy fun I usually expect from his films, and that’s great. He has a great cinematic presence that makes so much trash effortlessly watchable, and he’s more than capable of handling more meaty material. This movie might not blow my mind necessarily, but it looks tense, and it looks like we’ll see Butler in a way we haven’t before. I’m really into this, and you bet I’ll see it once it’s released.
The Vanishing will hit select theaters and VOD platforms on January 4th, 2019.
Rust Creek
Backwoods thrillers like these are about a dime a dozen, and I’m not really seeing anything here that will differentiate this from any other film like it. But I’ll always give anything a shot. The lead here is Hermione Corfield, and she’s been showing up in minor roles in stuff like Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so I’m curious to see if she can carry a film on her shoulders.
Rust Creek will open on VOD platforms and select theaters January 4th, 2019.
State Like Sleep
It’s usually hard to tell whether movies like this will be good or not, but the idea of Katherine Waterston investigating her husband’s death in a noir-ish thriller is enough to sell me on this. And the inclusion of Michael Shannon is the cherry on top. It seems competently put together and engaging enough, which surprises me that I’m only hearing about this now, but I’ll definitely check this out.
State Like Sleep will be available on VOD platforms on January 1st before hitting select theaters on January 4th, 2019.
I Am The Night
Not a lot of trailers this week, so I thought I’d throw this one here as well, especially since I didn’t discuss the first trailer that came out a while back. This looks cool. Patty Jenkins, Chris Pine, sleazy LA-set mystery, what’s not to like? What wasn’t present in the first trailer are the moments that show Pine being completely unhinged (which is the best Pine, tbh), and that really caught my attention. I only vaguely know about the story this is based on, but it’ll be nice to see how this creative team interprets these events. If it’s worthwhile, I might write about it on here.
I Am The Night will premiere on January 28th, 2019 on TNT.
