Annette

Holy Motors is a film I still need to see, I keep putting it off for one reason or another, even though it seems like something I’d enjoy. But now that this is on the way from the same director, who seems to be one of those “one movie a decade” kinda guy, I might finally get to it because this looks rad as all hell. Obviously the cast is aces, but the music is really cool, and I love the way it looks. It just looks like something different, and I’m always in the mood for that.

Annette will release in select theaters on August 6th, and Amazon Prime on August 20th.

Joe Bell

This feels like a movie that should’ve come out like a decade ago. I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way, but this does feel like the kind of LGBTQ-themed drama that was big many years ago, the ones that relied heavily on the tragedy of being a part of the LGBTQ community, and the hardships they face. The film does seem well intentioned and harmless enough, I suppose there’s nothing inherently wrong making a movie with this particular angle, but I think there’s a wide variety of stories that are more worth telling than this. Speaking of wide, what’s with the super wide aspect ratio? What an odd choice.

Joe Bell hits theaters on July 23rd.

Till Death

When I first heard about this project, I was excited, and this trailer did not disappoint me one bit. I do feel like it was on the verge of giving too much away, but I’ll forget most of it by the time I see this. Granted, this doesn’t look like a great movie or anything, if anything, it seems like a more simplistic version of Gerald’s Game. But I like a straightforward genre movie, and this looks like it’s gonna go to some gnarly places, and it’ll be cool to see Megan Fox get into some nasty business with whatever her character’s husband set them up to. I’m looking forward to this.

Till Death hits theaters and VOD platforms on July 2nd.

Candyman

I’m pretty sure I covered the first trailer on here back when this was scheduled to release last year, but I figured it would be nice to showcase the new trailer and get everyone excited for this. Nothing has really changed regarding my anticipation for this. I really like the vibe that Nia DaCosta is bringing to this, I loved her debut feature, Little Woods, and I’m happy to see her make the leap to stuff like this and the Captain Marvel sequel (though, I do hope she doesn’t get stuck in the Disney machine). This trailer’s good, the movie looks good, not much else to say that hasn’t been said already.

Candyman will be released in theaters on August 27th.

Settlers

I can’t help but feel they gave away more than they should have here. God help me if they try to pull a “they were on Earth all along” twist. It doesn’t look that bad overall though, and Sofia Boutella, Jonny Lee Miller, and Brooklynn Prince are one hell of a trio. I’ve dug these actors, and it’s cool to see them in a sci-fi film like this. Hopefully the film turns out pretty good, but it can honestly go either way. I’ll be cautiously optimistic about it though.

Settlers opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on July 23rd.

How It Ends

I have a feeling I might be in the minority on this one, but this isn’t doing anything for me. I normally don’t mind quirky comedies, I doubt that’s the issue. I just feel like the whole gimmick of the filmmakers bringing in all their Hollywood friends will just get old fast. I mean, the only time I’ve ever been somewhat invested in a story that revolves around rich people during the apocalypse, it was in This Is The End, which allowed everyone to take the piss out of each other, while this seems a bit more sincere in its attempts at insight, and I’m just not buying it. Perhaps the trailer is just selling it short, I will probably give it a watch once it’s out.

How It Ends opens in select theaters and VOD platforms on July 20th.
