A Complete Unknown
It’s hard to really get excited about biopics these days. They are so easy to fall under the usual tropes and formulas, and rarely do they seem to venture out of those confines. I do like James Mangold as a filmmaker a lot, he’s made plenty of movies I love, and I’m sure this will be watchable and handsomely made, but will it be anything more than that? I’m not so sure. But we’ll see.
A Complete Unknown will be released in theaters on a currently unspecified date in December.
The Thicket
“Samuel Goldwyn Films Presents A Tubi Original Film” is not a combination of words I ever would have expected, but this looks pretty fun. I like the cast assembled here, I love me a good western, and it seems like there might even be some horror undertones as well, which is really cool. Plus, after Accused, I’m not gonna think that a movie is lesser, just because it’s associated with Tubi.
The Thicket will open in select theaters on September 6th.
Spellbound
Vicky Jenson is a good director, and having people behind this who were instrumental to a lot of early Pixar classics is cool, but…I don’t know, man. This seems very basic, I guess is the word I’m looking for. I’m waiting for a proper hook to come into play, but it really just seems like it’s about a princess curing her parents from their curse, and that’s it. It’s giving “we have Brave at home” vibes. Maybe there’s more to it, so I’ll give it a shot, I’ve typically enjoyed Netflix’s animated films, so hopefully this is just a blah trailer.
Spellbound hits Netflix on November 22nd.
His Three Daughters
Do we never see the ailing father in this? Because that’s a pretty interesting gimmick for a movie like this, and it also gives the filmmakers more of an opportunity to really explore the sisters and their dynamic. I like these actors a lot, and it looks like they’re getting a lot of room to really explore their characters. I like the look of this, I am very much looking forward to it.
His Three Daughters opens in select theaters on September 6th before streaming exclusively on Netflix starting September 20th.
The 4:30 Movie
You know what, I think I’ve been wanting a movie like this from Kevin Smith for a really long time, and I’m glad we finally have something that is a bit self-reflective. I honestly had no clue this was even a thing, so consider this a pleasant surprise. I know his stuff hasn’t been great as of late, but he’s one of those guys I will always kind of root for, even if they haven’t earned that in a while. I doubt this will be like this The Fabelmans, but I’m excited to see this.
The 4:30 Movie hits theaters on September 13th.
The Other Laurens
I heard a lot of pretty good buzz about this, and I can see why, it looks very cool and stylish, but also very sleazy and pulpy, and with a sense of humor. I haven’t seen anything from this filmmaker, so I don’t know what really to expect, but I like the look of this, and I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for it.
The Other Laurens opens in select theaters on August 23rd before streaming on VOD platforms on August 27th.
