SDCC Trailer Talk: Shazam!

With the recent announcement that the standalone Joker movie is greenlit, it puts the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel and Shazam in an interesting spot, seemingly given the go ahead to put as much focus on their individual superheroes while putting little effort in building the DC universe as they were initially planning with Batman v Superman and Justice League. People responded well to Wonder Woman, we’ll find about Aquaman soon enough, but first, it’s time to check out the first trailer for Shazam, which just released at SDCC.

That looks delightful! Asher Angel looks like he’s having a blast, Zachary Levi is totally owning the whole childlike enthusiasm of the role, and it’s very bright and colorful and fun. Yeah, this looks like it could be a really great time.

Also like that this is Mark Strong’s second turn as a DC villain. I wished there was more to him here, but I’m sure we’ll get more as more trailers get released down the line. After all, this doesn’t come out until April of next year.

It’s nice to see a DC movie really aim for a younger crowd this time around, and I hope it turns out great. I was a big fan of David F. Sandberg’s previous films, Lights Out, and Annabelle: Creation, and this is whole different beast for a guy like him. I can’t wait to see what he does with this.
