Nicolas Cage Reteams With Mandy Producers For Richard Stanley’s Color Out Of Space

Now this is really cool! I loved Mandy, and it looks like the good folks at SpectreVision loved working with Cage, so they’re teaming up with him again as they, along with ACE Pictures, produce a new film, which will be directed by Richard Stanley! And to make this even better, the film is an adaptation of the short story by H.P. Lovecraft called “The Colour Out of Space.”

If, like me, you haven’t read the short, this is what it – or rather, the film adaptation – will be about, according to the press release:

COLOR OUT OF SPACE is a story of cosmic terror about The Gardners, a family who moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. The mysterious aerolite seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color. To their horror, the Gardner family discover that this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches…including them.

Yeah, I’m into it. I’m getting some strong Annihilation vibes, which is super enticing. Now, Richard Stanley is known mostly for his early work like Hardware (1990) and Dust Devil (1992), and his really brief involvement in the disastrous 1996 adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau (do check out the 2014 documentary Lost Soul, it’s terrific). I don’t think I’ve ever considered any of his films capital G great, but given the people he’ll be collaborating with, I’m sure he’ll be given the resources to make this as weird and insane as it should be.

2018 was a great year for Cage, so I hope his streak continues. I can’t wait to see what he and Stanley do with this kind of material. Are you as excited as I am? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments!
