Laapataa Ladies

A sweet but pointed social satire about the resilience of women who have to carefully navigate the patriarchal structures they’ve been born into.

Love Lies Bleeding

A truly weird and one-of-a-kind crime film that goes into strange places, but it’s a journey that is so worth taking. I was entranced by this film.

Sasquatch Sunset

This is not going to be for everybody, but I personally found this to be very funny, ambitious, and occasionally pretty thoughtful.

Snack Shack

A very endearing and energetic coming-of-age dramedy and time capsule of the early 90s that explores male friendship really well.

Stopmotion

Super creepy, unique, and well crafted character study about familial trauma and the way we use art to process it. This really got under my skin.

The Fall Guy

Everything that makes pop entertainment so great. Great cast, great humor, great action, and a thoroughly enjoyable love letter to stunt folks everywhere.

The First Omen

A studio horror film that goes way harder than you ever would have expected, really leaning on the 70s vibe, and it’s anchored by a fantastic lead.

The Last Stop In Yuma County

A fun and tense darkly comic thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat so quick, and holds that suspense for the entire runtime.

The Old Oak

Ken Loach’s potentially final film is an earnest cry for us to be better to each other and create community, and I found it engrossing and moving.

Thelma

This is a hilarious and touching film about trying to stay connected to who you are while still coming to terms with the vulnerabilities of growing old. It’s a very good time.
And there you have it! Those are the films that I dug the most this year. And I gotta say, this is a really strong bunch already, and the second half of the year has some really interesting films coming up that I’m very excited for. We’ll see how many of these survive to the final Top 50 list. Anyways, let me know what you think, and feel free to tell me about some of your favorite films of 2024 so far in the comments!
