I’m pretty sure something of this nature was already announced a while back, but I guess not. Variety just came out with an exclusive, saying that Jared Leto is set to star and executive produce a Joker standalone movie.
Yay…?
I know that his version of the character has its fans, none of whom I’ve actually met in the real world, and I can’t for the life of me understand what they see in him, but I just don’t see this as remotely interesting or necessary.
We already have a Joker movie coming from Todd Phillips, and Margot Robbie is spearheading that Birds of Prey movie, which is still in development and recently hired a director. There just doesn’t seem to be much interest in this from anyone. From the looks of it, even the diehard DC fanatics are divided over him. So, who is the audience exactly?
While it’s super easy to make fun of the guy, Lord knows I’ve done my fair share, but I think Jared Leto is a solid actor. This is just a waste of everyone’s time, including his.
It should also be noted that this could be non-news. There’s no formal, official announcement here, it’s all inside sources as stated in the article. Sure, they could be right, for all I know, but it could also be a bunch of suits throwing ideas around the room, and seeing what sticks. I’ll maybe find this news more legitimate once we hear about writers and directors getting attached, but until then, consider me skeptical of this being a thing.
