My exposure to Carmen Sandiego is admittedly rather limited, mostly to just seeing a few episodes of the Saturday morning cartoon show that aired on Fox from 1994 to 1999. But if anything, she was a figure that was instantly iconic and recognizable, more so than some of her peers from the same era, and it’s cool to see Netflix try to bring that back in such a big way.
Along with an animated series (also starring Gina Rodriguez) slated for next year, a recent report from Deadline just revealed that Gina Rodriguez will also star as the title character in a live-action film adaptation for Netflix, for which she will also serve as a co-producer.
Here’s some other bits of info that Deadline had to say.
“The movie will be a standalone Carmen adventure that will embrace the beloved ’90s property. No writer or director is yet attached to the movie.”
So, not a lot to chew on at the moment, but the casting is still exciting. Gina Rodriguez has killed it in everything I’ve seen her in, including the very recent Annihilation. I’m curious to see what this new version of the character is like, and I can’t wait to see what Rodriguez brings to the table.
