Fast and Furious Animated Show Coming to Netflix

I always thought that if the Fast and Furious franchise were a thing in like the 80s or 90s, it would’ve had its own Saturday morning cartoon. Unfortunately, those aren’t really a thing anymore, but we now have the next best thing.

Netflix has announced that they will be teaming up with DreamWorks Animation (who is responsible for a number of Netflix animated programs) to bring a Fast and Furious animated series to the streaming platform.

It will focus on a brand new character, Tony Toretto, the teenage cousin of Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto. Tony and his friends will be recruited by the government to infiltrate an elite racing league that they believe serves as a front for an evil criminal organization. So, yeah, if that doesn’t get you the least bit curious, I don’t know what to tell ya.

I think this is pretty damn exciting. Aside from a few gripes with the most recent film, I’ve been totally on board with where this franchise has gone, and this feels like a natural addition to that. I’m curious if it will skew young or if it will have a more mature edge to it. Either way would be in line with the series’ tone.

Not much else to say at the moment, so I’ll leave you with these words from Netflix VP of Kids and Family, Melissa Cobb:

“We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures. The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films.”

This is still early in the developmental process, so there is no release date yet.
