The mildly anticipated sequel to Top Gun has been in principal photography for just over a month now, and it looks like the film has finally found the actor to play the son of Goose, who was played by Anthony Edwards in the original film.

Not even a week ago, it was reported that the front runners were Nicholas Hoult, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell, who recently got extra attention due to the popularity of the Netflix rom-com, Set It Up. And – for the record – I was rooting for Powell.

But according to an exclusive from Variety, it looks like the filmmakers went with Miles Teller.

It’s honestly not that surprising considering Miles Teller starred in Top Gun 2 director, Joseph Kosinski’s last film, Only The Brave. It wasn’t just an excellent film, but Miles Teller gives one of his very best performances in it. So, despite an initial disappointment in the casting choice, I remain optimistic that Teller will pull it off.

But seriously, go check out Only The Brave, it’s really, really good.

Top Gun: Maverick is set to release on July 12, 2019.
